What is Anaemia?
Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body, are insufficient to meet the demands of the body. In moderate cases, this leads to symptoms such as tiredness, weakness and pale skin.
When severe, anaemia can have seriously debilitating consequences, preventing patients from undertaking even the most basic of tasks. Symptoms in severe cases can include extreme fatigue, breathlessness and chest pain. The World Health Organisation estimates that anaemia affects up to 25% of the global population.
The Anaemia Community is comprised of people with first-hand experience of iron deficiency anaemia, patient group representatives and clinicians, all of whom are committed to improving the understanding of the impact of iron deficiency anaemia on people living in the UK and how it is managed within the NHS.
